Chic Chihuahuas
my pet DHARMA with Kate's pink collar
If diamonds are a girl’s best friends and dogs are man’s best
friends, then what are pets with crystal collars to us?
My little Dharma is a stress buster; she sits in her Dedon
couch nestled between black pillows the whole day watching as I work. When I
get disgruntled with glitches and pause for some deep breaths, she immediately
jumps up to my design table and into my lap. Without fail, I relax.
A dog’s sensitivity to its master’s moods is what makes her
his best friend and buying her some bling to wear around her neck not only
awards her ownership but also rewards her with style.
Thus, when I met Kate Barbon who customizes anything from
flip-flops, to bags and cell phone charms, I asked if she could create a collar
for Dharma. She said she could and so we worked on a collar design for “ma
petite cheri.”
Kate is no newcomer to personalized style. She started her accessories
business back in 2000, designing bracelets necklaces, earrings, and bangles for
the local market.
In 2005, she opened “Accents by Kate” which was a
customization and importation business. She imported beads and crystals that she
supplies to exporters while creating one-of-a-kind designs for stylish clients
who want to put their personal stamp on accessories. Today, her product line
includes cast metal and metal findings for men’s accessories such as skulls and
crossbones.
For Dharma, we designed a pink collar with clear and deep
pink crystals while for Flick (fashion designer Jun Escario’s pet) we designed
a collar with three rows of crystals on tan leather.
